SUMMARY:McGill Theater Marquee Lighting Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:McGill Theater Marquee Lighting Ceremony\nWe’ll plan on seeing you in McGill at the historical theater for the McGill Theater Marquee Lighting Ceremony. \nThe new marquee that now is positioned on the front of the McGill Theater was officially put up back in August\, 2022. It has yet to have a proper celebratory lighting! That is\, until January 20\, 2023 at 5:00 p.m. \nIf anyone is interested (because we can be sure that it will be freezing but exciting) the owner of the building will be giving a tour of the theater afterwards. \nThis is for all those interested in seeing the theater and the current progress of the renovation. \nExciting times to be in McGill!

SUMMARY:NNRY Winter Steam Photo Weekend Spectacular
DESCRIPTION:NNRY Winter Steam Photo Weekend Spectacular\nIf you think you were born one hundred years too late to witness the glory of steam railroading\, then we have good news for you: you weren’t. There still exists a place where steam locomotives rule the rails. \nHidden away in the high desert of east central Nevada is a time capsule like no other\, the Nevada Northern Railway National Historic Landmark. Annually during the first two weekends in February\, time travel is possible. Come to Ely Nevada\, set your watch back a century\, and photograph railroading as it was in the last century. \nThe Nevada Northern Railway is not a mishmash of equipment from different railroads or different countries\, nor is the equipment prettified or garish. This is the original railroad equipment in the original paint schemes in the original setting\, on the original Nevada Northern Railway mainline.  All of this equipment has been on the property for decades\, and some if it more than a century\, all of it still operating on the original track that was graded and laid a century ago. \nThis was the time when steam moved mountains. The real business of this railroad was copper and copper was king! It was the reason that the railroad was built in the first place. Ore trains ran day and night\, year-round. The demand for copper was insatiable. It was the miracle metal that made all of the newfangled inventions\, such as the electric light and the telephone\, possible. Today our trains still move from the mine to the mill—steam powered\, of course. \nWhat can you expect during the photo shoots? World-class photographic opportunities\, steam locomotives pulling vintage freight and passenger cars that are original to the railroad. Here\, trains are still made up with wooden cars whose origins date back as far as 1872. The crews will be in period dress\, adding to the experience. \nSo why come to Ely in the winter? If you think that Steam locomotive 93 looks good on an 85-degree day in August but wait till you see it on a frosty February day. Billowing white clouds of steam plus plumes of black & gray smoke towering above the canyons and valleys. Snow? Weather here can be capricious! It can range from blizzard conditions to cobalt blue skies sometimes within minutes. In the past we’ve experienced every type of meteorological conditions that wintertime Ely experiences\, including shirtsleeve weather. But regardless of the weather\, the show goes on. \n \n  \nParticipants have won numerous photo contests\, recording timeless scenes of a historical railroad that are second to none. Many of the “Winter Spectacular” photos rival the best that National Geographic has to offer. \nOf course locomotives\, rolling stock and tracks are a big and obvious part of this railroad. But its just part of what makes a railroad work. You also need the infrastructure: Enginehouse\, machine shop\, carpenter shop\, blacksmith shop\, depot and dispatcher building. Oh and don’t forget\, the locomotives go nowhere without stopping at the coaling tower and water standpipes. We have those too\, the original ones! \nConsidered by William L. Withuhn\, Curator emeritus\, History of Technology and Transportation at the Smithsonian Institution\, “Among all railroad historic sites anywhere in North America\, the Nevada Northern Railway complex at East Ely is-no question in my view-the most complete\, most authentic\, and best cared-for\, bar none. It’s a living American treasure and a stand-out one. Historic tracks\, original depot and office building\, Enginehouse\, Freight Station\, three original steam locomotives\, five historic and rare wooden passenger cars\, Kennecott diesel engines\, 60 early freight cars\, working machine shop\, foundry-even the coaling tower and water tower that are icons of the site-everything is still there.” \nWhat will we have running for the next photo shoot?  It varies from year-to-year\, but in general we have a broad range of original\, Vintage Nevada Northern Railway equipment running out on the main line and in the East Ely yard. \n\nWe’ll have steam pulling our original wooden passenger consist made up of a RPO/baggage car and passenger car.  This consist has been serving passengers and departing from this depot for over a century now.\nShould there be a mishap on the tracks here\, we’ll send for the big hook; our original century old operating steam powered wrecking crane. This wrecking crane is pulled by a century old 2-8-0 steam locomotive that looks like it just rolled out of the American Locomotive Company shops. The wreck train consists of the crane\, flat car\, tool car\, outfit car and\, of course\, a caboose.  (Don’t worry – even if there is no mishap we will stage one to demonstrate the big hook in action\, under steam)\nOnce the tracks are cleared\, it’s time to get on with the business of railroading. Freight trains can once again roll and so will ore trains.  We will roll our fleet of original ore cars with our original locomotives.\nMost of the freight in the last century moved in boxcars. No self respecting railroad would be without boxcars – and the N. N. Ry is no different. A fleet of our original wooden boxcars with arch-bar trucks\, built in 1912 are in top condition and are ready for their next load.  Most model railroaders would give anything to have a vintage freight fleet like this.  You will see the real-life\, full scale 1912 freight roll by time-after-time this weekend out on our original main-line.\n\n  \nLearn More About the Railroads Winter Steam Photo Weekend HERE!\nDiscover More White Pine County Events HERE!

Looking forward to seeing the community come down for these FREE shows. Let’s support these amazing musicians and let them feel welcome. Everyone is invited! These shows are made for families\, friends\, and blankets in the grass. \n \nJuly 29th – Jake Jacobson\, opener Darren Senn\n\nDarren Senn Bio:\nThrough engaging stories and simple\, well-crafted songs\, Darren Senn is sure to take you someplace.\nSince releasing the studio album Detrimental Tendencies in 2018\, Senn released two new singles in 2020 : “Gone Are the Days\,” which harkens back to the simplicity of childhood\, and “Winnemucca\,” another stripped-down gem taking us on a lonely trip to a Nevada desert town to meet an old high school friend. “It’s a painting about the human condition. Not the happiest number\, but one of my favorites. A long lost buddy and me were both struggling with alcohol and life and decided to meet up in Winnemucca and drink about it.”\nBorn and raised in Eugene\, Oregon\, Darren Senn has resided in Stateline\, Nevada (Lake Tahoe) for the past 24 years and plans to keep cranking out folk songs and playing shows until the end of time!\nWebsite: https://www.darrensenn.com/home\nSpotify: https://bit.ly/3NDEsHn\nYouTube: https://bit.ly/43bqNNn\n\nJake Jacobsen Bio:\nCountry crooner Jake Jacobson is cut from a different cloth.\nA world-class athlete from the age of five\, Jacobson performed at levels most people never dream of — all before he turned 17. And during the most stressful times of his young career\, Jacobson turned to country music. Now\, the neo-traditional “throwback kid” is spinning his own country gold.\nWith roots in Reno\, Nevada and an upbringing in a Northern California ranching town of 2\,000 people\, Jacobson finds himself drawn to the stories and lifestyles of the unique characters intersecting his life. And those are precisely the people and places that jump from the speakers on his latest work\, the four-song EP Reno.\nOn Reno\, Jacobson celebrates what made him — from the blistering weather of Nevada’s high desert to the neo-traditional country sounds he first heard from his dad’s own honkytonk band in the late 90s and early 2000s. You don’t need to listen hard to hear the influence Jacobson pulled from getting up on stage as a young kid and singing along to Brooks & Dunn’s “Neon Moon” with his dad.\nBut Jacobson is far from a tribute act. Much like his heroes before him (artists like Keith Whitley\, Randy Travis\, and Cody Johnson)\, Jacobson finds inspiration in the people and places that make his perspective unique.\n“Reno is a city where there’s no last call\,” Jacobson says. The combination of alcohol\, gambling\, and nearby outdoor destinations like Lake Tahoe make it a unique cross-section of all kinds of kinds. In his song “First Call\,” Jacobson turns that trope on its head as a clever ode to leaning on the reliable ones in your life instead of the vices that can dig you deeper into the ground.\nReno the EP is much like Reno the city\, in a lot of ways. For one\, the four-song EP takes turns that feel uniquely distinct but each vital to what makes the work whole — much like the changing weather in the mountain town. “We truly have all four seasons of weather\,” Jacobson says. “You just never know when one season stops and the other begins because they rotate year-round.”\nAnd while Jacobson’s rising path to success is one tinged with a tip of the hat to the modern age — his first big break came when Randall King caught wind of a cover he posted on Twitter and invited him to come out to Nashville\, eventually leading to his debut EP with Trent Willmon and a slew of dates opening for artists like King\, Clay walker\, and Kip Moore — there’s no doubt his continued success will be a testament to the timeless values of hard work and good storytelling.\nWebsite: https://jakejacobsoncountry.com/\nSpotify: https://bit.ly/3CZiHwO\nYouTube: https://bit.ly/3pw6IDV

His powerfully deep vocals and jazz inspired\, blues guitar riffs are unforgettable; uniquely his own\, while reminiscent of the legendary BB King and Albert King. As a child\, Chris Cain attended concerts with his dad to hear many of the great blues artists of the time. When Cain burst onto the blues scene in 1987 with his award winning debut album\, he soon found himself sharing the stage and trading licks with a few of those legends\, including Albert King and Albert Collins. Chris Cain has released a dozen albums\, each filled with soul-stirring songs pulled from his own blues drenched heart. His brand of blues is unforgettable.\n\nCain was raised on stories of his father’s childhood upbringing on Memphis’ Historic Beale Street and attended his first B.B King concert at the tender age of three. Blues music played continuously on the home stereo and family outings were often trips to concerts. Cain recalls\, “I remember when I was a kid\, my Dad would be mowing the lawn with the stereo blasting Muddy Waters. When I look back\, that was pretty cool! There was always music playing at our house\, Ray Charles\, B.B. King\, Freddie King\, Albert King\, all the greats.”\n\nAt the age of eight\, Cain taught himself to play guitar and began playing professionally before he was eighteen. Chris studied music at San Jose City College\, and was soon teaching jazz improvisation on campus. Over the next twenty years\, Cain would also master piano\, bass guitar\, clarinet\, alto and tenor saxophone. The combination of his blues upbringing and his jazz studies melded to form the searing guitar style that sets Chris Cain apart and has moved him to the top ranks of the blues music scene.\nWebsite: https://www.chriscainmusic.com/Cain_history.html
