This time we will read Canoeing With The Cree by famed journalist Eric Sevareid (he spent more than a decade as a television correspondent on CBS Evening News.)\n\nThe book describes the adventure of Sevareid and his fellow high school friend. Walter Port\, as they embark on a 2\,250 mile canoe trip from Minneapolis to York Factory on the Hudson Bay. They did this as teenage novices without the aid of motors\, communication or even good maps. The journey took them four months\, and included shooting hundreds of rapids and portaging through wilderness. Jolly\, giving\, and full of life\, Fezziwig adored the holiday season and threw his very own Christmas Ball every year. The Ghost of Christmas Past takes Scrooge back to one of these parties where he sees himself as a young man\, in love with Christmas and having the best time. \nA page straight out of the book\, this year’s Centennial Fine Arts’ Fezziwig Ball is meant to capture the same jovial magic. \nPeriod costume attire encouraged! Think Dickensian\, mid-19th century garb. What is most important is that you have fun! This is the most wonderful time of the year\, after all. \nLook forward to the Elderblossoms performing. A live five-piece band\, they will be providing the ambience and music for the evening. \nTickets are $35 per person. DESCRIPTION:Make sure you’re not wearing your Saturday best during this year’s Crab Crack on February 3rd and March 2nd at the Ely Elks Lodge\, because attempting to be dainty is a losing strategy at this type of event. For most people\, this is another great gathering at the table with some friends and family. \nThis event serves 500 pounds of crab that is shipped to Ocean Beauty Distributors in Salt Lake from Fishhawk Fisheries in Astoria\, Oregon. Volunteers from the lodge drive to Salt Lake to pick up the frozen crab on Wednesday before the event. The crab is thawed and served at just the right temperature. Along with the crab\, 60 pounds of coleslaw and 50 loaves of garlic bread\, cocktail sauce and 39 pounds of melted butter is also served with dinner. \nYou arrive to your seat\, and a plate of crab legs\, a “crab cracker”\, and bib awaits each guest. \n$55 per ticket \n$70 for steak and crab \nYou see many guests holding a conversation while cracking open crab legs\, pulling the meat off with their hands popping it in their mouth and continuing on their journey of disassembling a crab leg for all of the meat it has to offer.  Some choose to wear the bib that is provided and others try to maintain their fashion trend by opting out on the bib option. \nThe volunteers keep circling the tables with bowls of crab\, waiting for you to flag them over for another set of crab legs. \nContact Gale Bartlett for more information and tickets at (775) 293 – 0107.

DESCRIPTION:Winter Steam Photo Spectacular\nRailfans from around the world come to Ely to photograph winter steam in early February each year. \nPhotography workshops are typically intensive three-and-a-half-day experience that is based at photogenic Nevada Northern Railway\, National Historic Landmark in Ely Nevada. Time stopped at the railroad. You will be able to hone your photography skills under the tutelage of well known rail photographers in the western United States. \nThe workshops offer an in-depth\, hands-on photographic instruction in a time capsule that is essentially unchanged since it was built a century ago. The workshop will incorporate talks\, edit-and-critique sessions\, and photo assignments in each day’s schedule. \nLearn how to navigate your surroundings and work with light\, color\, background\, and other influences and challenges inherent in each unique setting. You will gain a better technical understanding of how to use your camera’s body\, lenses\, and various settings. You’ll have questions. The instructors are there to answer those questions and get you to look at the world with a new appreciation. They are there to push you out of your comfort zone. \nThe goal is to help you understand on how to create stronger\, more interesting compositions using wide angle\, normal\, and telephoto lenses. You’ll have the chance to discover new ways to use color and pattern to add depth\, emotion\, and graphic power to your images. This will help you transition from just taking pictures to expressing powerful ideas through your imagery. Expand your ability to choose compelling subjects and portray them in more meaningful ways. \nThe highlight of the workshops might be the night photo shoots. Using “Hollywood” level lighting equipment\, you will have the ability to photograph the night in a whole new way. DESCRIPTION:Winter Steam Photo Spectacular\nRailfans from around the world come to Ely to photograph winter steam in early February each year. \nPhotography workshops are typically intensive three-and-a-half-day experience that is based at photogenic Nevada Northern Railway\, National Historic Landmark in Ely Nevada. Time stopped at the railroad. You will be able to hone your photography skills under the tutelage of well known rail photographers in the western United States. \nThe workshops offer an in-depth\, hands-on photographic instruction in a time capsule that is essentially unchanged since it was built a century ago. The workshop will incorporate talks\, edit-and-critique sessions\, and photo assignments in each day’s schedule. \nLearn how to navigate your surroundings and work with light\, color\, background\, and other influences and challenges inherent in each unique setting. You will gain a better technical understanding of how to use your camera’s body\, lenses\, and various settings. You’ll have questions. The instructors are there to answer those questions and get you to look at the world with a new appreciation. They are there to push you out of your comfort zone. \nThe goal is to help you understand on how to create stronger\, more interesting compositions using wide angle\, normal\, and telephoto lenses. You’ll have the chance to discover new ways to use color and pattern to add depth\, emotion\, and graphic power to your images. This will help you transition from just taking pictures to expressing powerful ideas through your imagery. Expand your ability to choose compelling subjects and portray them in more meaningful ways. \nThe highlight of the workshops might be the night photo shoots. Using “Hollywood” level lighting equipment\, you will have the ability to photograph the night in a whole new way. You will have the chance to experiment with different settings\, viewpoints and capture outstanding images that you thought would be impossible. \nBy the end of the workshop\, you will be tired but will be leaving with a new comprehension of what it takes to “get” the shot. You should be more comfortable in using your and professional equipment. You will be looking at the world with a new awareness and judgment. Attending the workshop will make you a better photographer.
