8th Annual Race The Rails

How We Got Started

It’s a long standing tradition for road cyclists to race the historic steam engines of the Nevada Northern Railway. In 2016, local rider Wade Robison, suggested in a joking manner about making a social event out of it.  In Ely’s typical attitude the answer was, Let’s Race!

Our Founders

As with most good ideas, what started out as a spirited brain storming session turned into an unique collaboration between local cyclist, the Nevada Northern Railway, and the White Pine County Tourism.

Our First Race

Our first official race was in 2017.  The race course offers fun terrain for both road and mountain bikers at all levels. Choose between tarmac or gravel as your surface to race the train on. Regardless of whether you beat the train or not, there will always be party at the finish line to welcome you back.

Investing In The Outdoors

Race The Rails is a fundraising event that supports the efforts of Great Basin Trails Alliance to expand outdoor recreation opportunities in the county. Proceeds from the event are reinvested into local trail systems.

Race The Rails

Train vs Bicycles

September 7, 2024

The steam locomotive and the bicycle were both invented a little over 10 years apart. Both changed the way we travel. Which one will prevail in September at the Race The Rails?

At the sound of the train whistle, mountain bikers and road bikers race onto their individual courses to see who can get back to the depot before the train. This is not a race against time or your fellow riders, it’s a race against one of history’s most powerful inventions!

Mountain bikers test their speed and agility on a challenging 10 mile course through the beautiful mountains surrounding Ely, while road bikers prove their speed and endurance on a 25 mile course along roads and highways in the area. Everyone who finishes the course will receive a finisher’s medal.

Train Departs at 8:00 a.m. sharp! Race Begins at 9 a.m.
